Mathoura
We stayed at a place called Picnic Point. A lovely spot
right on the Murray. Unfortunately we had not figured on the Victorian
Melbourne Cup long weekend. The place was crowded with yahoos who yahooed all
night. We have had better night’s sleep.
Next morning we stopped off at Tarralgon lodge, which was
only 1 km up the road. One of the couples from the Deniliquin Baptist church
owned it and would have invited us to stay there but we had already booked
Picnic Point. Our bad luck because this was a magical place. Beautiful acreage
on the Murray, 9 hole golf course with kangaroos lazing on the greens and very
peaceful and on the Murray about 50 metres from Victoria. Kath Morse the owner invited us for morning tea and a game of golf,
so off we went. We discovered that Georgia’s classmate and family are good friends with the Morses when in Finley NSW. Small world. Neil Lawther will
be proud of me that I declined to play golf and did the right thing and spent the day with the family
as we headed down to Echuca. We went riding up and down the
Murray on the paddle steamers.
We then returned to Tarralgon Lodge for dinner with the
Morses and a Tassie couple who were stuck for accommodation due to the long
weekend and were invited to “the Lodge”. We have been invited to stay at this
Tassie couple’s home in Devenport when we get there. Anyway the two blokes
Colin and Graham were farmers and they talked a lot about the land and combine
harvesters etc but we all had a great night and we even had a relatively quiet
night back at Picnic Point.
Next stop Swan Hill Victoria
